History

Ikura Station opened on 25 October 1928 when the Ministry of Railways completed the Hakubi Line between Bitchū-Kawamo and Adachi, finishing the through route between Kurashiki and Yonago. Scheduled service through Ikura began on 25 November that year. In 1982 the station was added to the stopping list of the limited-express "Yakumo" for a single daily pair, an honour it retained until the March 2006 timetable revision. Parcel handling ended in 1984, and freight handling and on-station staffing ended together in November 1986 when the present station building was finished. With the 1987 privatisation of Japanese National Railways the station passed to JR West, and ICOCA acceptance began on 13 March 2021.

Notes

The station sits at the bottom of Ikura-kyō, a gorge eroded by the meandering Takahashi River, and the platforms themselves trace the curve of the canyon.
