History

Handa Station opened on 1 March 1886 on the Japanese Government Railways-operated Handa Line, a branch connecting Atsuta with Taketoyo, and is one of the oldest railway stations in Aichi Prefecture. The station was moved south to its present location in 1896, and the Obu-Taketoyo section was renamed the Taketoyo Line in October 1909. A platform overpass was added in November 1910 and the wooden station building was rebuilt and enlarged in 1912. Freight handling ended in November 1975, parcel service in February 1984, and the station passed to JR Central at privatisation on 1 April 1987. Automatic ticket gates were installed in May 1992, TOICA service began in November 2006, and the Taketoyo Line was electrified in 2015, with the overhead wiring routed carefully so that the historic footbridge could be retained.
