Cable-Hachimangū-guchi Station

ケーブル八幡宮口

History

Cable-Hachimangū-guchi Station is the lower terminus of the Iwashimizu-Hachimangū Sandō Cable funicular, operated by Keihan Electric Railway. The cable line first opened on 22 June 1926 as the Otokoyama Cable run by Otokoyama Sakudō (later Otokoyama Railway), with the lower station then called Yawataguchi. It was abolished on 11 February 1944 as a wartime materials levy, then reopened on 3 December 1955 under Keihan as Otokoyama Station. On 1 January 1957 it was integrated with the adjacent Keihan Main Line station under the unified name Yawatachō, and renamed in turn to Yawatashi on 1 November 1977 when Yawata gained city status. The two stations were re-separated on 1 October 2019, at which point the cable station took its current name and station number KH80.

Notes

Although it sits immediately next to the Keihan Main Line's Iwashimizu-Hachimangū Station and both are Keihan-operated, the two stations have remained physically separate even after their 1957 merger, reflecting the cable line's history as an independently-owned operation. Passengers must exit one fare gate and enter the other to transfer between them.
