History

Shimamoto Station opened on 15 March 2008 on the JR Kyoto Line (Tōkaidō Main Line) between Yamazaki and Takatsuki, filling a 7.5 km gap that had existed since the original line opened in 1876. The town of Shimamoto had lobbied for a station since 1961, but financial constraints kept the project on hold until JR West approached the town in 1997. Construction was funded primarily by the municipality, which led to an above-platform station building rather than the originally planned half-underground design. The station was assigned number JR-A37 when station numbering was introduced in March 2018; it became a JR West Transport Service contracted station on the same date.

Notes

The park adjacent to the station preserves the ruin of Sakurai Station, a historical road station on an ancient highway, famous as the site where Kusunoki Masashige is said to have parted with his son before the 1336 Battle of Minatogawa.
