History
Hon-Tatsuno Station opened on 23 December 1931 with the extension of the Railway Ministry's Hishin Line between Yobe and Higashi-Hashisaki, taking on both passenger and freight traffic. The line was renamed several times before becoming part of the Kishin Line on 10 October 1936. Freight handling ended in 1984 and parcel service in 1985. At the privatisation of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987 the station came under JR West. The original 1931 wooden station building was used until March 2009, when operations moved to a temporary structure; a second-generation overhead station building entered service on 13 March 2010, funded largely by Tatsuno City. ICOCA support began on 26 March 2016.

Notes
A girder of the original 1931 footbridge bore the cast inscription "TAKATORI WORKS 1912 IGR" from the Imperial Government Railways era and was preserved on Platform 2 after the 2010 rebuild.
