History
Harima-Takaoka Station opened on 1 September 1930 with the inauguration of the Railway Ministry's Hishin Line between Himeji and Yobe. The line's designation changed several times before becoming the Kishin Line on 10 October 1936. Freight handling was discontinued in 1961 and parcel service in 1971, when the station became unstaffed. JR West succeeded the station at the 1 April 1987 privatisation. The station was originally a single side platform, but a passing loop and an additional platform were added between fiscal 1990 and 1993 as part of a wider San'yō Main Line grade-separation programme, entering service on 21 March 1994. ICOCA service was introduced on 26 March 2016.

Notes
The original 1930 layout was a single track, single platform; the passing loop installed in 1994 retains a 1-line-through configuration with the through track on the north side, while the loop track was added as a later modification.
