History

Settsu-shi Station opened on 14 March 2010 on the Hankyu Kyoto Main Line in Settsu, Osaka, as part of a redevelopment area along the line. Designated station number HK-67, it is described as Japan's first explicitly carbon-neutral railway station. Estimates from 2008 put its annual carbon emissions at 65 tonnes; Hankyu aimed to cut 35 tonnes through technical measures such as solar power, elevator regenerative braking and reduced water consumption, then offset the remaining 30 tonnes via carbon credits. The station has two side platforms connected by an underground passage, each with its own ticket gate. Only local trains stop here; all higher-class services pass through. Station numbering was introduced across the Hankyu network on 21 December 2013.

Notes

Settsu-shi was Japan's first explicitly carbon-neutral railway station - opened in 2010, it combined on-site solar generation and regenerative-braking lifts with offsets from carbon credits to balance its estimated 65-tonne annual emissions.
