History

Kuwamachi Station opened on 18 July 1922 on the Iga Railway (the original Iga Tetsudo), serving a stretch of line between Ueno-machi and Nabari in what is now Iga, Mie Prefecture. Through a chain of corporate consolidations the operator changed several times, becoming part of Osaka Electric Railway in 1929, Sangu Express Electric Railway in 1931, and Kansai Express Railway in 1941 before the wartime merger of 1944 placed it within Kintetsu Corporation. The station has been unstaffed since 1977. In October 2007 Kintetsu spun the line off, and Kuwamachi became part of the present-day Iga Railway. A single short side platform serves the route in both directions.
