History

Chibata Station opened on 1 December 1936 as part of the Japanese Government Railways Futamata-nishi Line, later the Futamata Line, serving the Kosai area of Shizuoka Prefecture. Freight handling ended in 1962 and parcel services in 1970, after which the station became unstaffed. On 15 March 1987 the Futamata Line was converted into the third-sector Tenryu Hamanako Railroad, and Chibata came under that operator. The station retains two opposing platforms and a concrete station building, part of which is leased to a dental clinic. Daily ridership is modest, averaging around 50 boardings per day in recent fiscal years.
