History

Kagato Station opened on 1 September 1962 when the Japanese National Railways' Akō Line was extended between Inbe and Higashi-Okayama, and from the outset it was an unstaffed station handling passengers only. With the 1 April 1987 privatisation of JNR the station passed to JR West. An ICOCA-compatible reader-only ticket gate entered service on 15 September 2018, and a barrier-free public restroom adjoining the station forecourt opened in 2023. The station carries the line code JR-N10, sits 38.5 km from the Aioi terminus, and is a passing loop-free halt served by a single side platform shared by trains in both directions.
