History

Gōkei Station opened on 17 February 1925 as Shisawa Station, the southern terminus of the Hakubi South Line built by the Railway Ministry in Sōja, Okayama Prefecture. It became an intermediate stop the following May when the line was extended toward Minagi, and the line was absorbed into the Hakubi Line in October 1928. The station took its present name on 16 May 1935 after the scenic Gōkei gorge about 8 kilometres to the north. Freight handling ended in 1963 and the station was destaffed in 1971. Operation passed to JR West at the privatisation of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987.

Notes

Despite the station name, the namesake Gōkei gorge — one of Japan's "five great scenic valleys" — lies about 8 kilometres north of the platform; the unattended station building is on the opposite side of National Route 180 from the Takahashi River.
