History
Island Kitaguchi Station opened on 21 February 1990 with the inauguration of the Kobe New Transit Rokkō Island Line, an automated guideway transit system. The station is in Kōyō-chō Naka 1-chōme, Higashinada-ku, Kobe, Hyōgo Prefecture, 3.5 km from the line's terminus at Sumiyoshi Station. It was provisionally named 'Rokkō-jima Kita' during planning. Damage from the Great Hanshin Earthquake on 17 January 1995 closed the entire line; service between this station and Marine Park was restored on 12 May 1995 and full operation resumed on 23 August that year. Since 20 July 2018 it has carried the secondary name 'Koiso Memorial Museum of Art' under a naming-rights agreement.

Notes
Since 2018 the station has carried the naming-rights subname 'Koiso Memorial Museum of Art' — a tribute to Kobe-born painter Ryōhei Koiso whose former studio is exhibited at the nearby museum.
