History

Shigino Station traces its origin to 1 November 1932, when a signal box was installed between Hanaten and Kyobashi on the Japanese National Railways Katamachi Line; it was upgraded to a full station on 1 September 1933. Both upbound and downbound tracks were elevated in 1964, and a new station building opened on the southern side. After the 1987 privatisation the station passed to JR West. In December 2006 the Osaka Metro Imazatosuji Line opened an underground station beneath the JR platforms. Major track works between 2011 and 2018 reconfigured the JR site into a three-platform, four-track layout to host the Osaka Higashi Line, which began through service to Shin-Osaka in March 2019.
