History

Higashi-Hanazono Station opened on 22 November 1929 as Rugby-Undoujō-mae Station, a seasonal halt timed to the inauguration of the neighbouring Hanazono Rugby Stadium and initially serving only on match days. The line passed to Kansai Kyūkō Electric Railway in 1941 and to Kintetsu in 1944, and the station was renamed Rugby-Jō-mae in 1950. It was renamed Higashi-Hanazono in 1967 alongside the completion of the adjacent inspection depot. A long programme of grade separation raised the down platforms onto a viaduct in 2010 and the up platforms in 2014.

Notes

The post-viaduct station building wears a rugby-ball monument that nods to nearby Hanazono Stadium, the spiritual home of Japanese rugby.
