History

Shin-Nagata Station opened on 1 April 1954 as a JNR Sanyō Main Line halt in Nagata Ward. The Kobe Municipal Subway Seishin-Yamate Line followed on 13 March 1977 with Shin-Nagata as its temporary terminus until the line extended to Ōkurayama in 1983. The 1995 Great Hanshin Earthquake on 17 January destroyed the JR embankment and damaged the subway; a temporary station west of the original site opened on 10 March 1995, with the rebuilt JR station opening on 3 April 1996, and the Kaigan Line opened from here on 7 July 2001. JR West introduced station number JR-A65 in March 2018.

Notes

An 18-metre lifesize statue of the manga giant-robot hero Tetsujin 28-gō (Gigantor) stands in nearby Wakamatsu Park, commemorating manga artist Mitsuteru Yokoyama's birthplace and giving the station its subtitle.
