History
Kawai-Takaoka opened on 19 November 1930 on the Sangū Express Electric Railway during the new line's run between Sada (now Sakakibara-Onsenguchi) and Sangū-Nakagawa (now Ise-Nakagawa). The line passed to Kansai Express Railway with the 1941 merger of Osaka Electric Tramway and Sangū Express, then to Kintetsu on 1 June 1944. The flanking single-track sections were converted to double track in 1967. PiTaPa acceptance began on 1 April 2007. On 21 December 2013 the station was made unstaffed throughout the day with the simultaneous removal of its ticket vending machine.

Notes
Although Kawai-Takaoka and JR Ichishi sit roughly five minutes' walk apart, the two railways have never set up a formal connecting-fare arrangement.
