History

Gongemmae Station opened on 25 August 1929 as the temporary terminus of the Japanese Government Railways Meisho Line, which was extended westward from Matsusaka. The line was extended onward to Iseki the following March, demoting Gongemmae to an intermediate station. Freight operations were withdrawn on 1 April 1963, and with the privatisation of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987 the station passed to Central Japan Railway Company (JR Central). The unattended single-side-platform station now has no station building, only a rain shelter built directly on the platform, and is administered from Matsusaka Station.
