History

Yao Station opened on 14 May 1889 with the inauguration of Osaka Railway's Minatomachi (today's JR Namba) to Kashiwara section. The line was taken over by Kansai Railway in 1900 and nationalised in 1907; the line was renamed the Kansai Main Line in 1909. Freight handling ended on 1 October 1980 and parcel service on 14 March 1985. JR West inherited the station at the 1 April 1987 privatisation. Automatic gates entered service on 14 July 1998 and ICOCA acceptance began on 1 November 2003. A new overhead-concourse building opened on 6 July 2013 after a barrier-free reconstruction. Station numbering JR-Q25 was introduced on 17 March 2018, and the commuter limited express Rakuraku Yamato began calling there on 17 March 2025.

Notes

Although the station carries the city name, the actual commercial heart of Yao is around the Kintetsu Yao Station roughly 1.6 kilometres to the northeast.
