It opened on 29 November 1900 as Kami-Sumiyoshi Station, the southern terminus of the original Ōsaka Bashaki Tetsudō. It was suspended on 1 February 1908 for electrification work and resumed passenger service as part of the new electric Uemachi Line on 1 October 1910. Owner changes followed — Naniwa Densha Kidō (1907), Nankai Railway (December 1909), Kinki Nippon Railway (June 1944), Nankai Electric Railway (June 1947), and the present Hankai Tramway (December 1980). The stop sits on an embankment crossing over the Nankai Kōya Line.
