History

Hōryūji Station, in the town of Ikaruga in Nara Prefecture, opened on 27 December 1890 on the Osaka Railway. The line was absorbed by the Kansai Railway in 1900 and nationalised in 1907, and the station has been served by what is now JR West's Kansai Main Line — locally branded the Yamatoji Line — ever since. The current station building was completed in 2007, and station numbering arrived in March 2018, assigning the station the code JR-Q32. It serves as a primary access point for visitors to the nearby UNESCO-inscribed Hōryū-ji temple complex.
