History

Utagō Station opened on 15 November 1931 as the temporary terminus of the Japanese Government Railways Mine Line when the line was extended from Nago Station. On 24 February 1933 a further extension to Susa absorbed this portion of the Mine Line into the San'in Main Line, demoting Utagō to a through station. Heavy rainfall in July 1965 buried the platform under roughly 4,000 cubic metres of mudslide debris. Freight ended in 1963 and parcel service in 1984, with full destaffing in March 1985. JR West took over in the 1987 privatisation. Storm damage on 28 July 2013 shut the line; the Susa-Nago segment resumed service on 10 August 2014.

Notes

The station building has been demolished and only one of the original two side platforms remains in use; there is no station forecourt, so passengers emerge from the platform directly onto Japan National Route 191 with the Sea of Japan immediately beyond.
