History

Shimo-Kawabe Station opened on 28 July 1938 with the extension of the Fukuen Line of the Railways Ministry between Fuchūmachi (now Fuchū) Station and Jōge Station. The Fuchū–Shimo-Kawabe section was electrified on 10 April 1954 but the electrification was withdrawn on 1 April 1962. Freight handling ended on 10 December 1970, and the station was converted to simplified-consigned operation on 10 March 1982. Upon the privatisation of the Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987, the station came under the control of JR West and today functions as an unstaffed local stop.
