History

Yayoi Station opened in July 1943 as Fukuda Station, serving the Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Mizushima aircraft plant via the plant's dedicated industrial railway. It was renamed Yayoi and opened to passenger traffic on 20 August 1948. In 1952 the line and station passed to Kurashiki City's transport bureau, and on 1 April 1970 ownership transferred to the present operator, the Mizushima Rinkai Railway, on whose Mizushima Main Line the station now carries number MR5. The original single platform was rebuilt on an elevated viaduct on 7 September 1992, at which point a passing loop was added; the station remains unattended.
