History

Unebi Station opened on 23 May 1893 as a station on the original Osaka Railway. It was absorbed into the Kansai Railway in 1900 and nationalised in 1907. From 1924 the Yoshino Railway connected to the station, eventually becoming Kintetsu's Obo Line, which was suspended in 1945 and abolished in 1952, returning Unebi to a JNR-only station. With JNR privatisation on 1 April 1987 it passed to JR West. ICOCA simple gates were installed in March 2005, and from March 2010 the line has been branded the Man-yō Mahoroba Line. The current temple-style wooden station building, built in 1940 for Emperor Shōwa's pilgrimage to Kashihara Shrine, remains in use.
