History

Tondabayashi Station opened on 14 April 1898 when Kawayō Railway extended its line from Furuichi. The right of way passed to Kawaminami Railway in May 1899 and to Osaka Railway in March 1919 through name changes and reorganisations. Kansai Express Railway absorbed Osaka Railway on 1 February 1943, and the 1944 wartime merger with Nankai Railway formed Kintetsu Railway, on whose Nagano Line the station has stayed since. Dedicated-pass automated gates appeared in April 1971, the section to Kishi was double-tracked on 25 October 1987, and a refurbished south plaza opened in March 2013.

Notes

Until 2019, the station was the closest railhead to PL Kyodan's annual fireworks festival on 1 August, and Kintetsu would close the underground passage in the evening to direct outbound and inbound crowds through separate gates.
