History

Matsunaga Station is a JR West stop on the San'yō Main Line in Fukuyama, Hiroshima Prefecture, located 212.4 kilometres from Kobe. It opened on 3 November 1891 when the private San'yō Railway extended its line from Fukuyama to Onomichi, in what was then Matsunaga Village. The station was moved 300 metres toward Hiroshima on 21 April 1893 and nationalised with the San'yō Railway on 1 December 1906. An overpass-style building replaced the original in March 1968. Freight ended in 1971 and parcels in 1985, and the station passed to JR West at privatisation on 1 April 1987. The Midori no Madoguchi closed on 3 February 2022.

Notes

Matsunaga was the central station of the former Matsunaga City, which has since been absorbed into Fukuyama; the station thus serves a town that no longer exists as a municipality.
