History
Higashi-Onomichi Station opened on 21 July 1996 as an infill station on the JR West San'yō Main Line between Matsunaga and Onomichi in the city of Onomichi, Hiroshima Prefecture. The project grew out of a local promotion committee formed in 1990 under the working name Takasu Station, which was renamed Higashi-Onomichi in 1992; ground was broken in December 1994. The unstaffed station occupies a rare flat tract on the south coast of Onomichi and has driven steady residential infill nearby. ICOCA-compatible simple gates were installed in 2007, the Midori-no-Madoguchi ticket office closed in February 2020, and station number JR-X17 was applied later that year.

Notes
The station has no elevator; the ramp linking the platforms to the outside is normally locked, and passengers must use an intercom to contact Onomichi Station to have it opened.
