History
Sammi Station opened on 3 April 1925 when the Japanese Government Railways Mine Line was extended between Nagato-Misumi and Hagi, in what is now Hagi, Yamaguchi Prefecture. That section of the Mine Line was incorporated into the San'in Main Line in 1933. Freight operations ended on 1 February 1963 and baggage handling on 1 February 1984. With the JNR privatisation of 1 April 1987 the station came under JR West. From 2021 the wooden station building was refurbished, and on 1 April 2023 part of the former office space was reopened as a short-term trial-living rental, "#Sanchanchi", run by the city of Hagi.
