Enkobashi-cho Station

猿猴橋町

History

Enkobashi-cho opened on 23 November 1912 as a Main Line stop on the day Hiroden's first section between Hiroshima Station and Kamiya-cho came into service, taking its name from the nearby Enko Bridge over the Enko River. Service was suspended in May 1942 during the Pacific War; following petitions from local residents the stop reopened on 1 March 1949, and after a brief suspension in late 1955 it resumed on 22 December the same year. Platforms were upgraded from simple at-grade safety zones to island-style boarding islands in 1974, and lengthening works followed as cars grew longer — though even then certain doors on three- and five-section articulated cars sometimes did not align with the platform on alighting. Station number M2 was assigned in October 1996. The stop closed permanently on 3 August 2025 when the Ekimae-ohashi route opened and the Main Line section between Hiroshima Station and Matoba-cho was abolished.

Notes

Enkobashi-cho stood so close to neighbouring Hiroshima Station that the two stops were almost continuous, and even though its platforms received an announcement system, no roof or approach-display board was ever installed before the stop was closed in August 2025.
