Nishi-kan-on-machi

西観音町

History

Nishi-kanon-machi opened on 1 September 1964 when Hiroden's Main Line was relocated from its earlier alignment to a new line running along Peace Boulevard between Tenma-cho and Koi; the new station opened in coincidence with the down-line move on that date, with the up-line following on 7 September. On the now-abandoned older alignment a stop called Miyako-machi had operated near the present location of this stop: it opened on 10 February 1960 as Fukushima-byoin-mae, was renamed Miyako-machi on 12 February 1962, and was abolished when both tracks were moved to the new alignment in September 1964. Nishi-kanon-machi received safety fencing on 11 May 1979, station number M17 in October 1996, and the number was changed to M16 on 3 August 2025.

Notes

Nishi-kanon-machi sits on the alignment that replaced an older route running across two dedicated tram bridges over the Yamate and Fukushima rivers; on that earlier line a separate stop called Miyako-machi served the reclaimed land for just four years (1960-1964) before being abolished when the new Peace Boulevard tracks opened.
