History

Hagi Station opened on 3 April 1925 as the temporary terminus when the Japanese Government Railways Mine Line was extended from Nagato-Misumi, in what is now Hagi, Yamaguchi Prefecture. The line was pushed on to Higashi-Hagi the same November, leaving Hagi as an intermediate stop. That section of the Mine Line was incorporated into the San'in Main Line in 1933. Freight operations ended on 31 March 1977, and baggage handling ended on 14 March 1985 when the station became unattended. With the JNR privatisation of 1 April 1987, the station joined JR West. The station building was listed as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 20 December 1996.

Notes

Although Hagi Station carries the city name, central Hagi sits closer to neighbouring Higashi-Hagi; the west half of the wooden station building has been converted into the Hagi City Nature and History Museum, which holds materials on Hagi-born "father of Japanese railways" Masaru Inoue.
