History
Shimoichiguchi Station opened on 25 October 1912 when the Yoshino Light Railway opened between Yoshinoguchi and the original Yoshino terminus (now Muda). The line passed to the Yoshino Railway by name change in 1913, to the Osaka Electric Tramway in 1929, to the Kansai Express Railway in 1941, and to Kintetsu in June 1944. Originally significant for timber traffic from the surrounding mountains, the station today is the gateway to Kurotaki and Tenkawa villages by bus. PiTaPa was introduced on 1 April 2007. Originating-train operations briefly disappeared in March 2003 and were reinstated on 19 March 2010.

Notes
The name "Shimoichiguchi" refers to Shimoichi, the historic commercial hub on the opposite bank of the Yoshino River, traditionally connected to the station by the Sengoku Bridge.
