山陽女学園前

History

Sanyo-jogakuen-mae Station opened on 24 November 1950 as Sanyo-jogakuen Station, named for the Sanyo Girls' Junior High School and High School that adjoin the station. After the addition of Sanyo Women's Junior College in 1963 the station was renamed Sanyo-joshidai-mae around 1 April 1963 and held that name for over half a century. The station took its present name Sanyo-jogakuen-mae on 1 April 2019, Hiroden citing the operator's standard 'change of the school name from which the stop was originally taken' explanation. The station is a 2-platform/2-track ground-level stop, with the down-side platform towards Hiroden-miyajima-guchi on the left of the line of travel and the up-side platform towards Hiroden-nishi-hiroshima on the right; a level crossing sits on the Hiroden-miyajima-guchi side. The station carries number M30. Notably, all other Japanese railway stations whose names start with 'Sanyo' are on the Sanyo Electric Railway in Hyogo Prefecture — this is the only 'Sanyo' station on Hiroden.

Notes

Sanyo-jogakuen-mae is the only station on Hiroden whose name begins with 'Sanyo' — every other 'Sanyo'-named railway station in Japan belongs to the unrelated Sanyo Electric Railway in Hyogo Prefecture. The station also sits literally on the Hiroshima City / Hatsukaichi City boundary; its formal address is in Hatsukaichi.
