History

Motoujina-guchi has a generational history. When the Ujina Line was extended from Miyukibashi-higashizume to the original Ujina Station in 1915, an intermediate stop named Miyuki-matsu ('Miyuki Pine Tree') was opened on the same day, 8 April 1915, on the west-embankment alignment heading south to the pier. When the line was relocated onto its present alignment via Ujina-dori on 27 December 1935, Miyuki-matsu was abolished and a replacement stop opened on the new line as Mukoujina ('Across-the-Bay Ujina'); from 1935 to 1951 it served as the line's southern terminus. Service was suspended after the 6 August 1945 atomic bombing and the section Dentetsu-mae to this stop reopened on 18 August 1945. On 1 April 1951 the line was extended further south to a new Ujina Shuten ('Ujina Last-Stop') terminus on reclaimed land west of the old west embankment, and this stop became an intermediate stop on the line; sometime before 1969 it was renamed Mukoujina-guchi ('Across-the-Bay Ujina Entrance'), and was finally renamed Motoujina-guchi ('Moto-Ujina Entrance', after the modern district name Moto-Ujina-cho) on 1 November 2001. Trams skipped this stop entirely from 18 to 22 May 2023 during the G7 Hiroshima Summit traffic restrictions. The stop sits at the boundary between street-running combined track and dedicated track, with platforms on opposite sides of an intersection, the down-side platform towards Hiroshima Port east of the intersection and the up-side platform towards Minami-machi 6-chome west of it. The stop carries number U17.

Notes

Motoujina-guchi marks the boundary between the Ujina Line's street-running combined-track section and its dedicated-track section south to Hiroshima Port; the disused west-embankment alignment of the pre-1935 line still survives as a two-lane road that runs north from this stop.
