History

Shibuki Station opened on 23 March 1924 with the extension of the Mine Line (then written 美禰線, later 美祢線) between Ofuku and Masaakishi — the latter now Nagatoshi. The station was initially a full-service stop handling both passengers and freight. Freight handling ended on 1 June 1963 and parcels followed on 1 February 1984; the station was de-staffed on 1 February 1985. It became a JR West station on 1 April 1987 with the privatisation of JNR. The station was closed from 15 July 2010 to 26 September 2011 after floodwaters in the Asa River washed out bridges and trackbed, and the line was again suspended after similar flooding on 1 July 2023.

Notes

Although the station building is in the Fukawa-Yumoto district of Nagato City, roughly half of the station footprint actually sits in the neighbouring Shibuki district, which gave it its name; the main Shibuki settlement is a short distance east.
