History

Marugame Station opened on 23 May 1889 as a stop on the privately built Sanuki Railway, between Marugame Port, Marugame Castle, and the city centre. The Sanuki Railway became part of the Sanyo Railway in 1904 and was nationalised on 1 December 1906. Freight ceased in 1982 and parcel handling in 1986, when the station was also added to the limited-express stopping pattern. JR Shikoku took over at the 1 April 1987 privatisation, and the tracks and platforms were elevated later that year on 2 October. ICOCA service began on 1 March 2014.

Notes

Marugame entered a "friendship station" agreement with Nanao Station in Ishikawa on 13 May 1994 — both cities share the historical Maeda clan connection through their castle towns.
