History

Wakayamadaigakumae Station opened on 1 April 2012 on Nankai Electric Railway's Nankai Main Line, after the prefecture, the city of Wakayama, and Wakayama University petitioned for a station to serve the university's hilltop Sakaedani campus and the adjoining Fujitodai new town. Of the roughly 3.5 billion yen construction cost, approximately 2 billion yen was covered by national, prefectural, and municipal subsidies, with the remainder borne by the local land-readjustment association. The station number is NK43, and it sits 58.0 km from Namba. On 18 October 2014 it was upgraded to a stop for the Southern limited express after the adjacent Aeon Mall Wakayama opened earlier that year.

Notes

Although it serves Wakayama University, the campus is still a 20-minute walk or 4-minute shuttle ride from the station.
