History
Wakayamakō Station opened on 6 March 1971 as the second-generation Wakayamakō Station, replacing an earlier 1956 station of the same name (later renamed Chikkō-chō) when the ferry terminal at Wakayama Port was relocated and the Wakayamako Line was extended to Suiken. The section onward from Wakayamakō to Suiken closed on 26 May 2002, leaving the station as the line's terminus. The station was made unstaffed on 1 April 2012, when station numbering NK45-1 was introduced; passes for the Limited Express Southern reserved-seat and the Surutto Kansai 3-day tickets were also discontinued. Built into an embankment with the concourse on the second floor and an island platform on the third, the station connects directly to the Nankai Ferry terminal.

Notes
Five minutes before each Nankai Ferry departure, the station plays "Rouge no Dengon", with "Cécile no Shūmatsu" used for transfer announcements between train and ferry.
