History

Idakiso Station opened on 15 February 1916 as Sandō Station (山東駅) on the Sandō Light Railway. It was renamed Itakiso (伊太祁曽) on 18 August 1933 after the nearby Itakiso Shrine, when the line was extended on to Kishi and the original Sandō Station became an intermediate stop. After successive transfers to Wakayama Electric Tramway in 1957 and Nankai Electric Railway in 1961, the station passed to Wakayama Electric Railway on 1 April 2006, at which point the third kanji was changed (祁 to 祈), giving the modern spelling 伊太祈曽. The station serves as the line's main depot and headquarters, and is the only staffed intermediate stop.

Notes

Idakiso has employed a succession of stray-cat stationmasters; the calico Nitama served from 2012 to 2015, and another stray, Yontama, was promoted from apprentice to stationmaster on 5 January 2018.
