History

Kawatana-Onsen Station opened on 22 April 1914 as a station on the privately operated Chōshū Railway, whose line north of Hatabu was nationalised on 1 June 1925 and absorbed into the Ogushi Line (the future San'in Main Line). Freight handling was withdrawn on 1 February 1963 and parcel handling on 1 February 1984. The station passed to JR West with the privatisation of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987. It serves as the nearest station to the Kawatana hot-spring resort, located about 1.8 kilometres away, in Toyoura, Shimonoseki city, Yamaguchi Prefecture.
