History

Atsu Station opened on 13 September 1905 with the inauguration of the San'yō Railway between Asa Station and Ōmine Station. The San'yō Railway was nationalised in 1906; the route became the Ōmine Line in 1909 and was renamed the Mine Line in 1963. With the privatisation of the Japan National Railway on 1 April 1987 the station passed to JR West. The station building was renovated in 2013. The station stands at the southern edge of Mine city, Yamaguchi Prefecture, near the Asa River and the Mazda Mine Proving Ground (the former Nishi-Nihon Circuit).
