History

Fukugawa Station opened on 17 March 1898 as a station on the San'yo Railway when the line was extended from Tokuyama to Hōfu. The railway was nationalised in 1906, and in 1909 the line was renamed the San'yō Main Line. A long-running freight spur served the Hodogaya Chemical Nanyo plant south of the station before the formal end of freight operations in 1998. With the privatisation of the Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987 the station passed to the West Japan Railway Company (JR West). It became unattended in 2005, and ICOCA service was added on 1 April 2023.
