History

Kumanoshi Station opened on 8 August 1940 as Kii-Kinomoto Station (紀伊木本駅), the terminus of the Kisei-Nishi Line extension from Shingū. The station served as the line's western terminus for more than fifteen years until the 1956 extension to Atashika. On 15 July 1959 the Kisei-Nishi and Kisei-Higashi lines were joined into a single Kisei Main Line between Kameyama and Wakayama, and the station was renamed Kumanoshi. Operation passed to Central Japan Railway Company on 1 April 1987 at privatisation. The current station building was completed in March 1990.

Notes

Although the official romanisation is 'Kumanoshi Station,' signs along National Route 42 render it 'Kumano City Station.'
