History
Kuwano Station opened on 27 March 1936 as the temporary terminus of the Mugi Line during its first construction phase from Hanoura, under Japanese Government Railways. Freight handling ended in 1970 and parcel service in 1984. With the privatisation of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987 the station passed to JR Shikoku. From 1992 it operated as a directly managed station with contract staff during morning and weekday hours, but full unstaffing followed on 1 September 2010. From 1 October 2001 all limited express trains began calling here, and a few early-morning and evening local services still terminate or originate at Kuwano. The ticket vending machine was removed in April 2019 and the platform toilet was closed two months later.
