History
Space World Station opened on 2 July 1999 in Higashida, Yahata-Higashi Ward, Kitakyushu, as part of a route alteration that took the JR Kyushu Kagoshima Main Line through the former Yawata Steel Works land between Edamitsu and Yawata on a shorter, straighter alignment. The station's name was chosen by public ballot as the most-voted suggestion. The Space World theme park that gave the station its name closed on 1 January 2018, but JR Kyushu has kept the station name unchanged, citing the lack of any rename request from the local government. The station code is JA23.
