History

Ongagawa Station is a JR Kyushu station on the Kagoshima Main Line in Onga, Fukuoka Prefecture, 34.3 km from the line's start at Mojikō. The privately run Kyushu Railway opened it on 15 November 1890 as the northern terminus of a stretch from Kurume, and it became a through-station on 28 February 1891 when the line was extended to Kurosaki. The station was relocated to its current site on 1 July 1908 after the Onga River was straightened, and Japanese Government Railways took control upon Kyushu Railway nationalization on 1 July 1907. The current building opened on 31 July 2021 after a fire on 30 August 2017 destroyed the previous depot.

Notes

Ongagawa once branched two now-vanished feeder lines — the Muroki Line (closed 1985) and the Ashiya Line (closed 1961) — and the latter is the only one to have served a coastal seaport from this otherwise inland junction.
