History

Atawa Station opened on 8 August 1940 in the town of Mihama, Mie Prefecture, as a stop on the Japanese Government Railways' Kisei-nishi Line. On 15 July 1959 the line was renamed the Kisei Main Line after the route was fully connected. Freight handling ended on 1 October 1982, and on 21 December 1983 the station became unattended. With the privatization of the Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987, control passed to JR Central. From its opening until 1978 the station also handled outbound ore from the Iruka mine, conveyed to Atawa by aerial ropeway. JR Central plans to demolish the original timber station building by 2026 and replace it with a waiting shelter.
