History
Fukuma Station opened on 28 September 1890 as an intermediate stop when the privately run Kyushu Railway extended its line north from Hakata to Akama. After the Kyushu Railway was nationalized on 1 July 1907, the station became part of the Hitoyoshi Main Line on 12 October 1909 and the Kagoshima Main Line later that year on 21 November 1909. JR Kyushu took control on 1 April 1987. From 1972 it has generally functioned as a rapid-service stop, with selected Kirameki and Relay Kamome limited expresses also calling. A multi-year redevelopment from 2007 produced a new elevated station building (2010), a free pedestrian deck, and double-deck east and west plazas (2011).

Notes
During World War II a short branch was hurriedly built from Fukuma into Kaminishigō to serve an army warehouse complex, then dismantled on the war's end in September 1945.
