History

Ōsugi Station opened on 20 December 1932 as the terminus of the then Kōchi Line, extended northwards from Kakumodani by Japanese Government Railways. The station lies in the town of Ōtoyo in Kōchi Prefecture's Nagaoka District, sits 87.2 km from the Dosan Line's starting point at Tadotsu and carries the station number D32. JR Shikoku inherited the station at the 1987 JNR privatisation. The original building burnt down on 2 January 2004, and a replacement opened on 12 March 2005; students from a local junior high school took part in the design and construction. Some Nanpū and Shimanto limited expresses stop here in addition to local trains.

Notes

The station building's design takes its cue from the 'Sugi no Ōsugi' — a paired Japanese cedar said to be over 3,000 years old, designated a Special Natural Monument of Japan, and reputed to be the tallest of its species in the world.
