History
Kitagawachi Station opened on 14 December 1939 as 'Akagawachi Station' when Japanese Government Railways extended the Mugi Line from Awa-Fukui to Hiwasa. It was renamed Kitagawachi on 1 October 1959. From 1 April 1963 the station was operated under contract by Nippon Kōtsū Kankō-sha. Freight handling ended on 1 April 1970 and parcel handling ended on 1 October 1972, when the station became unstaffed. JR Shikoku took over at the privatisation of JNR on 1 April 1987. The station carries number M20.

Notes
Although the station building was eventually removed, the Hiwasa interchange of the Hiwasa Road (part of the Anan-Aki Expressway) is built directly next to the station, with the station also marking the start/end point of that road.
